Title

What Butler is After

Description

The Walla Walla Statesman is opposed to General Benjamin Butler's appointment on purely partisan grounds, but also remembers Butler as the "Beast of New Orleans." Butler was considered cruel and rapacious in his administration of New Orleans after U.S. conquest of that C.S.A. city. Here, the Statesman affects to realize that Butler only wants the unimportant position of governor of Idaho Territory, so as to loot the mines as he looted New Orleans.

Abstract

The Walla Walla Statesman satirizes the possible appointment of Benjamin Butler as governor of Idaho Territory.
