Title

The Cause of Dull Times

Subject

Economy

Description

This Walla Walla Statesman editorial examines the current "dull times" in the economy, and concludes that gold/silver vs. greenback paper money is not the issue. The greenbacks are unpopular because their value fluctuates whereas gold/silver coins retain theirs. But the editor also sees the conclusion of a long war, with its federal buying and its supplying of large armies as a cause of the recession. Additionally, he points out that gold and silver remain more common for commerce in the west than in the east, and also that the economy is sounder in the west than in the east.

Abstract

The editorial of the Walla Walla Statesman concerning the postwar recession, comparing the east with the west.
