Employing Negro Soldiers

Title

Employing Negro Soldiers

Subject

Black race

Description

Although this editorial is reprinted in the Statesman without comment, other published writing by the Statesman editor make his racial biases clear. This Louisville Journal editorial condemns the use of black soldiers as criminal, and in the strongest of language. Kentucky was a border state, but it was a slaveholding state. The Emancipation Proclamation had not freed slaves in Kentucky, but only in the states in rebellion.

Abstract

The Washington Statesman reprints an editorial from the Louisville (Kentucky) Journal, condemning in powerful terms the enlistment of African American men in the U.S. Army.
