Capture of A Slaver

Title

Capture of A Slaver

Subject

Slavery

Description

The ECHO, a slave ship from the African Coast carrying three hundred Negroes, was captured in Key West by the United States Navy brig DOLPHIN. She is commanded by Lieut. John N. Maffit. They were ordered to sail to Charleston, South Carolina. (There is a follow up article in the November 12th edition also found in this database, "Crew of Slave Ship Jailed".)

These two articles, reprinted from newspapers on the other side of the United States in the far Pacific Northwest, reflect the intense interest of local readers in slavery.

Abstract

The editor of the Puget Sound Herald reprints the news of the capture of the slavery ECHO by the USS DOLPHIN, off Key West.

The "particulars," reported in the Charleston [SC} Mercury, are interesting, demonstrating the happiness of black at being in the United States, whether as slaves or no. This group, once out of hospital, danced and sang for their audiences. They expressed their pleasure at being in the United States. It will take more research to pull all this apart, but it would certain enforce the argument that slavery was benign.
