Abstract
"On a motion by Sen. Latham [D-CA], the Senate has adopted a resolution calling for correspondence between Secretary Seward and ex-President Pierce, having reference to a supposed conspiracy against the Government, in which the ex-President had been charged as a participant."
Latham read from the Detroit Tribune that the document, dated October 5, 1861, "said that the league was doing noble work in Maryland and among the soldiers at Fortress Monroe; that ex-President Pierce was one of the most influential members of the league, and that the document was now in the possession of the State Department."
Pierce was aware of these allegations because he had correspondence with Secretary Seward on this subject in December 1861. "It was at Pierce's request that he [Latham] now called for the correspondence in question."
"Mr. Chandler of Michigan (Rep.) said that he knew there was a letter.... There was such an organization and it was very wide-spread. At the commencement of the war, the Knights of the Golden Circle, it was thought, would be very patriotic and go into the army, and to his (Chandler's) certain knowledge, they had succeeded in getting a large number of the worst traitors in the National army, and these traitors are there now."
