Article 25 - Democratic Convention Slavery in the States and Territories.JPG

Title

The Baltimore Convention. First Day's Proceedings

Subject

Democratic Party (U.S.)

Description

One of multiple articles on the proceedings of the tumultuous 1860 Democratic convention, including resolutions.

This second Democratic convention, in June, was composed of delegates who had walked out of the first Democratic convention in protest. In general, they were opposed to the nomination of Stephen Douglas for the presidency of the United States, and advocated a party platform committed to the protection of southern rights in property; in other words, to slavery.

Washington Territory settlers could not vote in the presidential election, but they were vitally interested. Residents in the states of Oregon and California could vote in this election.

The San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin gave copious coverage to the sensational division of the Democratic Party. For readers in the Pacific Northwest, this Baltimore convention will nominate Buchanan's vice president John C. Breckinridge for president and Oregon favorite son Joseph Lane for vice president. The campaign of this slate of the southern wing of the Democratic Party will be run by Washington Territory's Isaac Ingalls Stevens.

Abstract

This is one of many articles in the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin that documents the shattering of the American Democratic Party over the issue of slavery. Here, we see in the rump Baltimore convention, the language of an attempted resolution incorporating the U.S. Supreme Court's 1857 ruling in the Dred Scott case.
