Description
An account of the resource
The principal item is the letter from Nathan Olney, at Ten Mile Creek, reprinted from the Mountaineer, concerning Native hostilities. On another page of the same issue, this agitation is attributed to "traitors" inciting the Indians.
On p. 2 is another article related to Indian relations: "How It Is Received." It has reactions from readers to the appointment of B.F. Kendall, a Democrat, as Indian agent for the territory.
Abstract

This is of significant in Washington Territory because of the proximity of the Crown Colonies of Victoria and Vancouver Island, and the possibility that Great Britain might recognize or support the Confederacy.

The War Worth All It Costs
Subject

Secession
Description
An account of the resource
The author says the war will cost "thousands of lives" and much treasure. "There will be sorrow and despair. Will it pay the cost? Yes, a hundred, a thousand fold, if we come out of the struggle conquerors... We shall be able to teach treason such a lesson... We shall find ourselves elevated to a higher moral plane..."
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Argument that the Civil War is worth fighting, even if the cost is grave.
It is significant that this argument was reprinted in the Republican Washington Standard, where editor John Miller Murphy was diligently identifying traitors in the territory. He made every effort to bring the war home, to not permit the war to be a regional, eastern conflict. No one knew, in 1861, how grave the costs of the war would be - as is clear from the statement that "thousands of lives would be lost."

Description
An account of the resource
John Miller Murphy, editor of the Republican Washington Standard, reprints with commentary a letter published in a south Carolina newspaper. The writer promises that if the border state slaves are freed and brought into the northern army, turned and sent south to free the slaves - that if there is a general slave emancipation - then southern white men would kill every slave over the age of 15 and perhaps younger, if the situation demanded that. The writer clearly suggests the reprisals which white masters expect in this event.
It is significant that Murphy would republish this letter. Representatives of the Republican party in Washington Territory argued for some time that Lincoln did not intend to free the slaves. While some Republicans were abolitionists, many were not.
Abstract

Abstract

Description
An account of the resource
As editor of the Portland Advertiser, George L. Curry, a former governor of Oregon and a recent contender for the U.S. Senate, does "the bidding of a handful of traitors on this coast, headed in Oregon by such men as [John] Whiteaker and Jo Lane, the authors of a crafty scheme by which the Pacific States could be made the field of a bloody conflict, and still in the same breath, with the effrontery of Satan, shouting forth their insidious cry, 'Peace!' 'Peace!' 'Compromise!' 'Reconstruct the Union!' 'Let the South go, and guarantee her rights!' ... That sheet never attempts to tell you what grounds the rebels have to ask for a compromise..."
Also on pp. 2-3 is "Democracy, Secession and a Free Press," a letter from "Uncle Sam" denouncing the San Francisco Herald, the Oregon Herald, the Corvallis Union and "Joe Lane's hireling, the Portland Advertiser... It is true that Portland is not under martial law, but are Oregon secessionists any the less traitors? ... This country has had enough of them; they are as full of Virginia pride and South Carolina logic as a hog of fleas; they smell of Cotton Confederacies and negro monarchies..."
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Accuses George L. Curry, editor of Portland Advertiser, of being the apologist for traitors. The Washington Standard waged a vigorous campaign against the Advertiser, urging that the newspaper be suppressed as treasonous.
The title of this article is so significant - that there were traitors in the Pacific Northwest.

A Common-Sense View of Compromise
Subject
The topic of the resource
Secession
Description
An account of the resource
The Republican Washington Standard republishes an editorial from the San Francisco Times, arguing against compromise. "No peace will ever be made upon the basis of compromise... There is nothing to compromise about" after the attack on Fort Sumter.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
An argument for no compromise with the Confederacy. The editorial argues, that "he who proposes compromise is an ally of the country's enemies." The editorial argues that while John Crittenden may have been well-meaning, his compromise would have been a mistake, had it been acted upon. The writer insinuates that James Buchanan was too weak during secession winter, and that the nation should have gone to war to restore the union prior to Abraham Lincoln's inauguration, and prior to Fort Sumter.

Southern Testimony
Subject
The topic of the resource
Secession
Description
An account of the resource
The Washington Standard reprints this letter from a Californian who "loves the sunny South," but stands on the side of union, arguing that the leaders of the Confederacy have deceived the people of the south, intending to establish a Confederate empire that would not be a republic, but rather a monarchy. He hints, but does not say, that this would be larger than the Confederate States of America.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Letter from a unionist Southerner who accuses Confederate leaders of "working secretly... for the establishment of a Southern Empire, having for its basis monarchical ideas."
