Gatherings by the Wayside
Democratic Party (U.S.)
Among these short "gatherings," n August 1861, Republican editor John Miller Murphy republishes a California article concerning "Union Democrats," who wish to suggest they are both for protection of the Union, of the United States, but remain Democrats, opposed to the Republican administration of Abraham Lincoln. Murphy notes that Seleucius Garfielde ran as a "Union Democrat," and lost the election for territorial delegate to Republican Wallace.
Article denounces "Union Democrats" in California. It calls them "The treason democracy" and says, "Treason is at a discount on this coast..."
